After students watched peers use dry measuring cups to combine flour, sugar, baking cocoa, spices and leavening ingredients and a liquid measuring cup to add the oil to the eggs it was time to pause for a cooking show moment to taste some previously prepped cake.
After each student sampled the cake I questioned them as to what the mystery ingredient was. There were numerous guesses but only in one class were beets mentioned.
My intent with this lesson was not to sneak beets into the students diet but was to encourage them to think about unusual ways the bounty of garden produce can be incorporated into ones diet. Most of the students were pleasantly surprised.
